Frequent failures of MBTA

The MBTA's General Manager Phil Eng says problems with the new Green Line Extension are more extensive than first thought.
The tracks' prefabricated ties were built with the rail gauge too narrow and will have to be repaired.
According to Eng, the problem was identified as far back as April 2021.

The MBTA is planning a series of brief shutdowns on different portions of the system to allow for necessary repairs and eliminate the speed restrictions that have frustrated riders throughout Greater Boston.

The problems appear linked to metal plates that connect the rails to the wooden ties that run perpendicular.
Those plates -- which were pre-installed off site before the rails were delivered to the MBTA -- are too close together in many areas, Eng said.

Concerns about safety seem to factor into the overall ratings of MBTA services.
According to the poll, only 28% of respondents rate the quality of the subway and trolley service as at least good.
And 35% said the quality of bus service was at least good.
